While there is undeniably a lot on offer on mobile phones these days – is it possible to create a romantic comedy film entirely revolving around mobile phones? The debut film of Oksana Bychkova, Peter FM (2006) attempts just that.

Peter FM is a Russian film, set in the gloriously gorgeous and charismatically trendy streets of St. Petersburg. The tale revolves around two characters: Masha and Maxim.

Masha (Ekaterina Fedulova) seems to have it all – she’s a top radio DJ for a popular Petersburg show, and seems to have practically the whole city listening to her every word. Unfortunately, her fiancé Kostya (Aleksei Barabash) is just not listening to her, and doesn’t realise the serious doubts she’s having about their impending fairytale wedding.

Maxim (Evgenii Tsyganov) is a young architect who hasn’t really got much to his name, except a recent offer to work in Berlin. This is the perfect opportunity for him to get out from his share-house hovel and make a name for himself, yet one day, everything changes when he finds Masha’s lost mobile phone.

Hence the deals on mobile phones - the couple are in contact frequently to return the phone and fix the mix-up, but they just never manage to find each other. Over time, they spend more and more time getting to know each other, but only manage to have the contact that’s on offer on mobile phone. It’s romantic and it’s funny – the two essential elements for any such film, and it’s also interesting enough to keep the audience guessing as to whether the two will meet, or if Masha will marry Kostya and Maxim will leave for Germany. Imagine a very cool Slavic Sleepless in Seattle and you’ll have Peter FM. But remember, it’s a Russian film – so there’s not necessarily a guarantee of a happy ending!
